Tipping Part 1

As a Financial Coach, one of the things I teach my clients is how to be generous...but not frivolous with their money. I came across an article on tipping (who to tip, how much to tip, etc) and I honestly learned a lot from it. While tipping is a personal choice, there are some rules to it that I’m going to share with you.

Tipping at a Restaurant. This is the most common place people tip. Minimum is 15%, but preferably 20% if service was good. If you can’t afford to leave a good tip, then don’t go out to eat. Food is a necessity, a restaurant is a luxury. There have been many times I’ve said, “we can eat out but not where we have to tip” due to our budget.

Tipping for takeout. Whether someone brings you your food or you go in and get it, you should still tip around 10%. For home delivery, be generous and give them a few dollars. If it’s a large order, make sure you tip even more.

Tipping your bartender. Yes! A dollar or two per drink is fine. Especially if you’re going to have more than one drink, then you know your drinks will continue to be good!

Tipping the Valet. This is once again a luxury, so if you choose to use the valet instead of self park, plan on tipping a few dollars for the convenience of having your car brought to you.
